When we are there, we will be studying science topics outdoors.

When we first get to our outdoor classroom, we find a quiet spot to write in our weather proof journals 10-15 minutes.

Most recently, we played a game called Survival that reinforced our ideas about how ecosystems function. To play, we all assumed the roles of predators and prey and were faced with the task of finding food, water, and avoiding predators. Players also had to beware of fire, disease and human.

When we are there, we love that we can learn about our environment first hand, have time to reflect in our journals, be outside, play games, be loud, and examine wildlife.

We are so fortunate to live in an area were we have unlimited access to such a beautiful and teeming environment.

Sincerely,

We transplanted baby kale plants into a larger tray and are enjoying watching them grow. We also played Taking Sides, Fortunately/Unfortunately and Four Corners. These games got us moving and helped us learn more about one another. It was fun. Soon we will be adding critters to our fish tank. We also have a cactus that is growing rapidly. We had a great first day and are very excited for the rest of the school year.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1545040627954381131.post-22654739587257339982018-02-28T07:34:00.001-08:002018-02-28T07:34:09.402-08:00In sixth grade we are fundraising for camp Keewaydin by selling Little Caesars products like cookies, pies and multiple different kinds of pizza kits. We have sold over 20 pizza kits and hope to sell more before March 7. Our next fundraiser will be the Chili Cook-Off on March 10 at 12-2pm. There will be a silent auction for a hedge trimmer, an artisan cake and a hand-painted chair. If you want to enter the Chili Cook-Off ($20 to enter) or for more information contact Kathyrn.st.george@wnesu.com . It will be held at the Grafton Elementary school gym . We are approaching our goal of 4,000 dollarsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1545040627954381131.post-38689407481343310552017-12-01T11:19:00.000-08:002017-12-01T11:19:55.156-08:00Longitude and LatitudeThis week we have been working on longitude and latitude. We used Google Earth to find NFL stadiums with coordinates. We've learned about the hemispheres. We also learned how to find places with coordinates and how to write coordinates. We even learned how to read coordinates. We also learned about how longitude and latitude is split up into hours, minutes and seconds. The four hemispheres are Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1545040627954381131.post-74584112772197172202017-10-25T06:32:00.000-07:002017-10-25T06:32:03.739-07:00On Monday our class made eco-bottles. It was three bottles taped together. One bottle {bottle A} has dirt and leaves like what we have in the forest. There are crickets and worms as animals. Then we have bottle B, it has nothing in it. Bottle C, it has rocks and water with some water plants. We have two fish and one snail in there as well. It represents symbiosis, a relationship where at lest one organism is benefiting. They provide nutrients for one another and the plants provide oxygen.
We picked honey crisps which are a favorite for most of the class. We ate a lot of apples! We picked over 20 bags of apples! We want to thank the Grape family for allowing us to pick at their orchard.
We did this so that we will have confidence in ourselves and have trust in each other. We believe this will make our classroom a better place and enable us to focus and learn.

Our vision: To learn we need to challenge ourselves to do our best at trusting and respecting each other.

Our mission: Pay attention to what you are doing and saying and communicate when our vision is threatened.
During our trip to Keewaydin we had tons of fun. In this photo one of the counselors was telling us a story about a Native American named Gustave. We ate brownies while he told us this wonderful story among Vermont's beautiful mountains.

On Thursday, we had choices about what activity we wanted to take part in. We were allowed to fish at recreational time. Throughout the week we did a lot of cool things like night walks, town meeting simulations, rock climbing, gardening and canoeing. At night time our cabin counselors read to us until we fell asleep. We also had jobs like hopper, dish washing, composting, recycling, wood carrying, sweeping, weather watching and prepping the tables.

We feel lucky that we were able to go on such an amazing trip. We are proud that we raised all that money. It was good to make new friends but it was sad to leave them behind.
They brought a a few of their exhibites from their museum. Some of the birds of prey they brought were the Red Tailed Hawk, a Barred Owl, and a Kestrel. The picture you see above is of the Kestrel.

While they where here they were teaching us a lot of stuff about the birds of prey like an Owl. Something that I learned was that an Owl can turn his head all the way up side down and they can do that because they have 14 vertebrae in their necks. Owls in the wild don't even live to see their first birthday, but in captivity they can live for about 30 years.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1545040627954381131.post-75714838855243168752016-11-21T05:33:00.001-08:002016-11-21T05:33:48.079-08:00GES 6th grade Makes a TerrariumThe terrarium is made out of a fish tank, moss, ferns, rocks and many more objects that you would find in the woods.

This is our terrarium. In the water part there are two guppies. In the dirt part there are 2 red wriggler worms. In the leafy part there is a cricket and grass seeds. How do the animals breath? Well, they can breath because of the plants.

This is a fun way to spend your summer. The guppies eat the snails waste and the snail eats the plants and algae. The worms eat the same as usual; dirt and decomposing matter. The cricket eats plants and even meat, on every continent except Antarctica. That is what is in the eco bottles.

The pumpkin raffle happened and Tyler won ours.🎃 It is the fifth one over from the white one.
